There has been various clinical research studies conducted on using CBD for smoking cessation. In a 2013 randomized controlled trial by University College London, 12 dependent smokers were given a CBD inhaler and 12 smokers were given a placebo inhaler. They were instructed to use the CBD inhaler when they had a craving for a cigarette.
The results showed that the CBD inhaler users reduced their cigarette intake by 40%, while those using the placebo had no reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked. When the researchers followed up on the CBD inhaler users, maintenance of that level was indicated.
Although this was a preliminary trial, the implications are that CBD may be a potential treatment for nicotine addiction and further research is warranted.
There was another 2018 double blind randomized study that gave 30 dependent smokers 800mg of oral CBD or matched placebo. They were then shown ‘pictorial tobacco cues’ and they were monitored for withdrawal cravings, heart rate and blood pressure. The result was that the 800mg of CBD helped reduce the “pleasantness” of the cigarette cues as opposes to the placebo users that had no reduction. This demonstrates that there is a strong indication that CBD is possibly beneficial for helping with areas of behavioral ‘triggers’ for smoking cessation. Although scientific research continues on CBD for quitting smoking, anecdotal evidence suggests that many people are successfully using CBD products that support their journey to be nicotine free.
